The new Siem Reap Angkor airport and what it changed for buyers
Siem Reap Angkor International Airport opened on 16 October 2023, about 50 km east of town. The facts, and how to judge a property by its real distance and road, not its brochure.

Facts as of 8 October 2026.
The airport in brief
Siem Reap Angkor International Airport opened on 16 October 2023. It is in Soutr Nikom District, around 50 km east of Siem Reap town and about 40 km east of Angkor Wat. The first phase can handle 7 million passengers a year, with a plan to grow to 12 million a year from 2040. It was built by Yunnan Aviation Industry Investment Group under a 55-year build-operate-transfer arrangement.
The old airport next to the city, which was judged unable to cope with growing traffic, no longer serves commercial flights. Arrivals now come in through a road corridor east of town.
How to use this when you look at property
The airport is a fact about travel, not a promise about prices. Practical points for a buyer or renter:
- Check the real journey. Measure the road time from the property to both the airport and the town centre, at the hour you would actually travel.
- Look at the road, not the map. A plot close to the new route can still have poor access. Visit it after rain.
- Do not pay for a story. If a listing sells a place on "airport proximity", ask what is built and what is only planned.
- Title comes first. Whatever the location, the title type decides what you can do with the property. See our guide to hard and soft title.
